I admit it. There have been times when I’ve browsed other people’s Facebook profiles and thought my own life didn't even begin to be as exciting as theirs. With all the fun photographs, interesting locations and exuberant status updates, it can make many of us feel that our own lives are comparably rather bland!
The first thing we need is to remind ourselves that what we see online isn’t necessary reality. In order to live more adventurously, we need to remain present in the moment, but we cannot do this if our minds are preoccupied with the cyber world and unfavorable comparisons.
To be more adventurous doesn’t mean you should throw caution to the wind. Neither do you have to go sky diving or spend a year backpacking around the world. Rather, living a more adventurous life happens when you try something new, take a chance, or live life with more enthusiasm. Something any one of us can do!
Adventure is waiting for you just outside your front door! All that is required is to be open to new experiences and live with intention. Here are some ways to start you on the right path:
Real adventure starts when we’re fully engaged in the present and stop living in the online world. Put down your smart phone and be in the moment! Quit thinking about what sort of response your next post will get on social media, or even whether people care about what you are doing. Just care about yourself and relish the present moment!
Having a daily routine is great for getting things done, but so often it can get predictable and boring. Instead, change something in your day that will shake it up and bring you back into the present moment. You will be more aware of your surroundings so you can find the adventure in your day to day routine. It can be as simple as going a different route to work and see what you might find!
We’ve all had those times in life when you’ve opted out of opportunities for adventure and then regretted it later on! Instead of setting yourself up for regret, say “yes” and participate fully. If fear or stagnation are holding you back from being more adventurous, be willing to get out of your comfort zone, and open to giving new opportunities a chance!
Everyone knows at least one person who is up for anything! Surround yourself with these spirited people and allow their zeal for life rub off on you! Having someone to share your adventurous experiences with makes it more fun and takes the discomfort out of doing something new. Let your existing friends know you’re down for trying new things, or why not join a common-interest group in your area and expose yourself to new people and ideas!
Open up your mind to your own creativity and to more creative living. When you have a creative mind, it gives you the ability to turn imaginative thoughts into tangible actions. If you don’t think you’re all that creative, just like any other skill, creativity can be learned, practiced and developed; and the more you make creativity part of your daily life, the more it will grow.
Be in nature
You don’t have to swim with sharks or rappel down a rock face to be adventurous. It can be as straightforward as going for a walk and getting some fresh air. Experts have shown that being in the great outdoors can help reduce stress and make us happier, freeing our minds to be present in the experience and really enjoy ourselves! It can simply be a walk around your neighborhood or local park, but with the mindset of an explorer who is always out to discover something new!
Would you like your life to be more adventure filled? My challenge for you is to think about one adventurous thing you can try today and go do it!
