How do often do you eat in a given day? Three square meals, or five to six smaller meals spread throughout the day? The great debate about the mealtime frequency continues, but one thing for sure is that we all love to snack!
As a fellow snacker, wellness coach and real-food enthusiast, I take an interest in the best ways to eat in order to feel and be your best! For me, healthy snacking is not only pleasurable, but is often a necessity! Why? Though I can’t speak for others, I know that when I am not properly nourished, I notice that I am not functioning at my best.
Though I am not a physician or nutritionist, I can offer my common sense account of how healthy snacking makes a hugh impact for me as I go about my day!
1. Curbs impulse eating
This is a big one for me! I get busy and end up skipping a meal. I then get so famished that I gobble up whatever is handy at the time, invariably something sugary! Indeed, the choices we make when we’re hungry of often not the best of choices! However, having a healthy snack one or two times a day can help you dodge the “I’m starving!” phase of hunger, allowing you to maintain energy levels and keep cravings in check!
2. Boosts productivity and mood
Eating heavy meals loaded with carbs and sugars, coupled with the daily stress of rushing around, can deplete your energy levels and cloud your thinking! Choosing smaller sensible meals consisting of lean, grass-fed meats and vegetables, combined with healthy mid-morning or mid-afternoon snacks can create slow burning fuel that will give you the consistent energy needed as you go about your day. Healthy snacks like a handful of almonds, some beef jerky or a few carrot sticks, serves to eliminated the energy highs and lows and gives a boosts to your mood, allowing you to operate at your fullest potential and get stuff done!
3. Keeps weight in check
Whether you want to lose a few pounds or maintain a healthy weight, eating a nutritious mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack is an excellent way to keep hunger at arm’s length, give you consistent energy, and avoid making inadequate food choices. So, plan ahead, and make sure your main meals of the day are crammed with nutrients, and that you always have healthy snacks on hand. Waiting until you’re hungry to make a food decision often leads to bad food choices, but a little planning can help you avoid these pitfalls and find the balance you need!
