Plantain Chocolate Brownies

I'd not had much experience with plantains in the past, but ever since I’ve assumed a paleolithic mode of nutrition, I have happily discovered the wonders and delights of the unpretentious plantain, especially when creating grain-free baked goods!

Paleo baking can often be something of of a crapshoot. Using coconut flour has frequently been disappointing, and almond flour, while it can be an excellent baking flour, eating it frequently can feel like an overdose on nuts! Substituting flour with plantains, however, is an amazingly effective way to create delicious paleo treats that are gluten-free and and grain-free, and taste so good that your non-paleo friends will be fooled!

This plantain chocolate brownies recipe is so ridiculously easy to make, only taking about 10 minutes from start to the time you place it in the oven. These brownies are slightly “cakier” than regular brownies, but they just as melt-in-your-mouth and always get a thumb’s up from my non-paleo, brownie-loving husband!

Plantain Chocolate Brownies


  • 2 ripe plantains (yellow with black patches)

  • ¼ cup cacao (or cocoa) powder

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ¼ cup coconut oil, melted

  • ¼ cup raw honey (less if plantains are really ripe)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 cup chocolate chips*

*If you are a fan of nuts in your brownies, add ½ cup of chopped walnuts, sprinkling them evenly on top of the batter at the same time you add the chocolate chips


  • Preheat the oven 350º F

  • Peel the plantains by cutting off the ends first, cut them into thirds, and then cut each third into two lengthwise. Take each piece and peel the skin away by pushing your fingers between between the skin and the flesh. The riper the plantains, the easier they are to peel

  • Place the plantain and everything but the chocolate chips to a food processor

  • Process all the ingredients for about 2-3 minutes or until you have a smooth batter, scraping down the sides once or twice

  • Pour the brownie batter into a greased 9x15 baking pan

  • Evenly sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top of the brownie batter

  • Bake for approximately 30 minutes, and allow to cool

  • Serve and enjoy!
